Low Waste Initiative to be introduced at Earle Brown Days- and we need your help!
Saturday, June 29, 2013
Centennial Park
Events such as the Earle Brown Days Festival can produce a lot of waste- on average 2½ pounds per visitor! Recycling food and beverage containers, along with collecting food waste for composting, can greatly reduce trash volumes and divert hundreds of pounds of waste from the landfill. Brooklyn Center is conscious of the environmental impact of Earle Brown Days, and we are proud to announce a new low waste initiative!
This year, instead of scattered single trash bins, we will have waste stations with three bins:
• Organics: food waste and food soiled paper such as cups, napkins, bowls
• Recycling: bottles, cans and all plastics 1-7
• Trash: Styrofoam, straws, plastic wrap, plastic utensils
We will also have an area to collect empty chip bags, plastics bags free from food residue, and cardboard.
Each waste station will be monitored by a volunteer Trash Ambassador. With hundreds of attendees throwing away their “trash”, an unmanned bin quickly gets contaminated. But with a bit of guidance, participants LOVE to do their part to save the earth!
How can you help? A few easy steps can make a HUGE difference.
• Be sure to dispose of your trash at a designated waste station! They will be placed at strategic locations and well signed.
• Think before you toss! Can it be reused? Recycled? Composted? If you don’t know, ask!
• Check the signage - Make sure you know which bin is the right one, or ask.
• Reuse - If you are bringing your own refreshments, make sure all items are compostable, recyclable or reusable.
• VOLUNTEER - Help make our Low Waste event successful by volunteering as a Trash Ambassador!
If you or your group would like to volunteer as a Trash Ambassador for a 2-hour time slot on Saturday, June 29 (10 am-noon, noon-2 pm, 2-4 pm, 4-6 pm (includes sorting and weighing of collected waste), please contact Jill Dalton at or call (612) 360-7830. Volunteers will receive instructions on how to monitor their station. Children under 12 should be paired with an adult.
