The Brooklyn Center Police Department Juvenile Unit includes a Juvenile Officer, School Resource Officer and a Detective from the Investigations Division. The task of the Juvenile Unit is to focus on juvenile crimes such as truancy, runaway, curfew with the overall goal of preventing more serious crimes from occurring. The Juvenile Unit works closely with other agencies serving youth, such as Hennepin County Juvenile Probation, youth outreach workers and the local school districts. Youth Open Gym
Grades 7-12. You’re invited to drop by for open gym. Round up your friends or meet someone new on the court. Basketball, volleyball, kickball, dodge-ball - choose a game and have fun! This cooperative program is supervised by Brooklyn Center Recreation, Police Department staff and the YMCA. IT'S FREE! Youth Explorer Program
Police Explorers is a program for young men and women between the ages of 14 and 20 years of age. The Explorer program teaches members various aspects of Law Enforcement as well as core values of Teamwork, Dedication, and Service to others. In order to join the post, you must: 
  • Have completed 8th grade
  • Be 14-20 years old
  • Submit an application to join
  • Pass a background check
  • Maintain a C average or better

Our recruitment window is September 1st through October 15th every year. After passing a background check, applicants must interview with members of the post as well as police advisors. If selected after the interview, you will become a probationary member for 12 weeks.  In addition to weekly training during the school year, the Brooklyn Center Police Explorers assist with numerous events in our city. As a group of 8 Explorers have completed over 180 hours of community service in the past. For example;
  • Earle Brown Days Parade
  • Earle Brown Days Fireworks
  • Law Enforcement Special Olympics Polar Bear Plunge and Torch Run
  • Brooklyn Center Dudley Softball Tournament
  • Police Community Awards Ceremony
  • Assist with traffic control for several nearby community events and parades
  • Participate in the State Police Explorers Conference every April 
  • Help bridge the gap between the community and our police department 
  • and more!
