If you are a new homeowner or qualifying relative of a homeowner, you can save property taxes by filing for the homestead classification. This classification provides a property tax savings for owner(s) or relative(s) that occupy property as there primary residence. The homestead credit is directly applied to your property taxes and may be up to $304 based on the market value of your property.

Receiving the homestead credit allows homeowners to make application for the property tax refund, and special refund if they meet the qualifications.  Relative homesteads do not qualify for property tax refund programs.

If there has been a change in your legal name, marital status or a death of an owner, the homeowner must notify the Assessor of this change by providing a copy of the legal document indicating this change. This document is required to update the ownership records and homestead classification. This change will not correct your tax statement. You will need to notify Hennepin County Property Tax at (612) 348-3011 to correct the name or address on your tax statement.

Property owners who are blind or permanently disabled may qualify for an additional tax reduction called the special homestead classification. Please call the Assessing office at (763) 569-3310 for more information.

If you are homesteading a property and are a Veteran with a service-connected disability you may qualify for the disabled veterans exclusion.  Please refer to the section regarding "Market Value Exclusion on Homestead Property of Disabled Veterans."

For filing a relative homestead classification please refer to the section "Relative Homestead Filing Instructions".
